Prayer times, notifications, Ramadan: behind the scenes of designing a companion app used by worshippers of all ages.
Designing the official app of an institution like the Grande Mosquée de Paris means designing for everyone: from students to grandparents, on new and old phones alike.
Listen before drawing
We started by listing the real daily uses: knowing when the next prayer is, being notified on time, finding the qibla on the go, following the life of the Mosque. Everything else came later.
Accuracy is non-negotiable
Prayer times depend on location and calculation method. Be a few minutes off and trust is gone. Calculations run on the device and notifications are scheduled locally, so the app stays reliable even offline.
Getting ready for Ramadan
During the holy month, usage changes scale. Cached content, a lightweight back-office, right-sized infrastructure: the goal is that no one ever sees a loading screen at iftar time.
Accessibility as a compass
- Adjustable text sizes and strong contrast.
- Short navigation: the essentials in one gesture.
- A bilingual interface designed for right-to-left reading.
What came next
This foundation, designed to be reusable, has since let us deliver the Cluster Digital Africa app in less time. The best proof that good scoping pays off well beyond a single project.
