A well-built Shopify store isn't just for launch day: it has to keep up with every key moment of the year. The steps to set it up.

Many online stores are designed for launch day… then every key moment becomes a race against the clock: a makeshift banner the night before a sale, a Valentine's Day promotion set up at the last minute, pages that slow down at the worst possible moment. The approaching Black Friday is a good example, but it's true all year round.

A Shopify store that's well thought out from the start changes the game: every key moment becomes a routine, prepared in a few hours rather than a few nights.

What to expect from a “calendar-ready” store

  • Reusable theme sections : campaign banner, announcement bar, offer page, featured selection. You switch campaigns in minutes, without a developer.
  • Automatic collections, built from rules (tag, price, stock): a “gift ideas” or “Mother's Day” selection is created in one click and updates itself.
  • Scheduled discounts, with a start date and an end date: the offer starts and stops on schedule, even on a Sunday at midnight.
  • Automated emails already in place : welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase follow-up. They work for you at every traffic spike.
  • Speed that lasts : few apps, optimized images, a lightweight theme. It's during key moments that every second counts.

The steps to build it

Six weeks is usually enough for a solid store, as long as you follow the right order.

1. Define the scope

  • The launch catalog: 30 perfectly presented products are better than 300 incomplete listings.
  • Shipping (zones, carriers, delivery times, costs), returns, and customer service organization.
  • A fast, mobile-first theme tailored to your identity, with campaign sections planned from the start.

2. Build the catalog

  • Product pages that answer customers' questions: clear titles, concrete descriptions, variants, weights for shipping calculation.
  • Consistent, optimized photos: they drive conversions… and site speed.
  • Consistent tags, which will later feed the automatic collections for each key moment.

3. Payment, shipping, and VAT

  • The payment methods customers expect: credit card, express payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay), PayPal, and possibly installment payments.
  • Clear shipping rates and a free shipping threshold, easy to adjust during a promotion.
  • VAT and, if you sell outside France, the markets and currencies.
  • Legal notices, terms and conditions of sale, privacy policy, and cookie consent management.
  • The 14-day right of withdrawal clearly explained, with a simple return procedure.

5. Test and measure

  • Real test orders, on mobile and desktop, all the way through confirmation and shipping emails.
  • The speed of key pages: home, collection, product page, cart.
  • Analytics and advertising pixels, with consent respected.

6. Launch… and prepare the first campaign

  • Go live, submit the sitemap to Google, first campaigns.
  • An email list built from day one: it will drive your best sales during key moments.
  • A first campaign built with the planned sections and collections, to make sure everything works.

The key moments of the year

In France, the commercial calendar looks roughly like this:

  • January : winter sales.
  • February : Valentine's Day.
  • Spring : Easter, then Mother's Day (late May or early June) and Father's Day (June).
  • Summer : summer sales, starting late June.
  • September : back-to-school.
  • Late November : Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
  • December : Christmas, the longest key moment of the year.

Depending on your customers, other dates matter just as much: Ramadan and Eid, Lunar New Year, or the key moments specific to your industry. A well-built store handles them all the same way.

The pitfalls that cost sales at every key moment

  • Apps that pile up over the course of campaigns and slow down the store.
  • Discounts created in a rush, that stack poorly or forget to stop.
  • Shipping fees discovered at the last moment, one of the leading causes of cart abandonment.
  • No email list : every campaign starts from zero and depends entirely on advertising.
